City Bakery Rosthern (Good For 2 Loaves Bread) R. J. Ballantine came to Rosthern in 1899 and took a job as clerk in a lumber yard. In 1905 he started a confectionery and in 1906 added the bakery. Sold to William Jacques in 1914. In 1929 Jacques sold the business to Mark Wong who discontinued the bakery and kept the confectionery. The directories list the City Bakery only in the 1921 and 1922 issues, but the Old Timers Association thought that the name City Bakery was started by Ballantine and the name was carried on by Jacques for several years after taking over. It is thought that the City Bakery name was discontinued in 1923 and that Jacques issued his own token at this time. |

Henschel & Co. Rosthern, Sask. (Good For 25¢ In Merchandise) Frederick William Henschel came to Rosthern in 1902 from Chaffey, North Dakota and started a small lumber yard at the same time that he took out homestead papers. In 1905 he loaned some money to the Gloeckler Bros, to start a general store in Rosthern. A short time later it appeared that this venture was going broke so Henschel took over the store and placed his son, Herbert Henry, in charge. Tokens were issued around 1910 and were used until 1931 when the store was sold on April 15th to William Precesky. Fifteen days later the store burnt down with all the records and tokens. Mr. Heschel states that tokens in the denominations of $1.00, 50¢, 25¢ and 5¢ were also used. |
