Assinboia Club 5 In Service
(uniface)

The Assiniboia Club was formed in 1882 to supply a social and recreational center for the business executive. In 1950, after renovating their premises on Victoria Avenue, they found themselves constantly short of change in the billiard room so tokens were issued. A game of billiards cost 2O cents and a game of 'pea pool' cost 5 cents payable in tokens only. Tokens were used until 1954 and then discontinued. At the next audit of the books all tokens on hand were ordered destroyed.

(Good For 1 Gal Coal Oil)

P. R. Perry started delivering oil in 1917 and in 1931 issued tokens to handle relief orders, issue 500. Discontinued the tokens in 1935 and the business in 1959, at which time he was the only oil peddlar on the streets of Regina. E. Hammersley helped Mr. Perry deliver oil from 1915 to 1929, and then started on his own. He still used the Perry home as his office and the same phone number. He also used the Perry tokens but discontinued business in 1934.

G.F. Blaxall Phone 8253
(Good For One Gallon Coal Oil)

George Blaxall was in the oil delivering business when the depression hit the West. At this time the Regina Relief Department issued vouchers to the recipients, for heating and cooking 'good for 8 gallons'. On delivering oil to the customer, the voucher was collected and tokens given for the amount not taken, so tokens were issued in 1931, he also had a paper ticket 'good for two gallons'. He only used the tokens during the depression and could not remember what happened to the tokens on hand. Business was sold in 1946.

McCarthy Supply Co., Ltd. Departmental Stores Broad St. Regina.
(Good For $5.00 In Trade)

Ed and John McCarthy, owners of a bakery and hotel, opened a supply house in 1907, selling both retail and wholesale. They expanded quite rapidly and in 1910 the company was rumored to be in serious financial difficulty. Some feel that the fire of January 11th, 1911 was a very convenient fire, but this is only speculation. However, no effort was made to rebuild. According to an employee the tokens were issued shortly before the fire and were for use in the grocery department only. A number of tokens were in the safe and escaped the fire but apparently they were destroyed later.
