Ralph & Black, Ltd. Tuxford, Sask. (Good For $5.00 In Trade) In 1905, William Ralph and his brother-in-law, Charles Holmes, bought 40 acres of land just south of the newly laid C.P.R. tracks. Here they built a store and a hotel, hauling material from Moose Jaw, 14 miles away, so as to be ready for the opening of the new town site of Tuxford. They had not consulted the C.P.R. before building and shortly after finishing they were informed by the railway company that the proposed site was north of the tracks and unless they purchased lots in this site there would be no stop there at all. They were forced to buys lot from the C.P.R. on the north side and in 1906 moved the store to the new location. The hotel was not moved but was converted to a community hall and was used as this until 1912. In 1907 Holmes sold out and moved to Marquis. Later in the year Robert Black, an ex-policeman from Ontario, bought into the business. Tokens were issued shortly afterwards and used until 1915 when Ralph sold out to Black. He sold out in 1920 to McBride's. |

Unity Legion #90 (uniface) [Blue token color, White lettering] The Unity Legion #90 was formed in 1920. For a number of years the secretary sold ordinary theatre tickets for drinks at their social evenings and dances and these tickets were only good for that evening and would not be honored at the next occasion. So in 1967 they ordered 1,000 of the tokens and these are good at the bar at any time. |
