The Consumers Supply Co. Limited Co-Operation Means Live & Let Live Hanley, Sask.
(Succeed Through Honesty, Industry & Persistency Good For $10.00 In Trade)

In 1909 a group of men around the new town site of Hanley formed a company and in June of 1910 the Consumers Supply Company opened for business with MacBeth Malcolm as Pres. Right from the start the company ran into difficulties and when the store burnt down in January of 1912, many accusations were made which only widened the rift between the owners. It seems that very little insurance was carried and no effort was made to rebuild. No one remembers the tokens but several have been found at the site of the burnt out store as nothing has ever been built on that location.

Home Bakery F.F. Karst Hanley, N.W.T.
(Good For 1 Loaf Of Bread)

The rail line came through the area in 1899 and Hanley was selected as a site for the town at this time. F.F. Karst does not show up in any gazetteer until 1905 and in 1906 they show F.C. Hunt as the baker. The town records do not show Karst at any time However, we have two different tokens and he could have been in business from the start of the town or he could have ordered from two different suppliers.

Also attributed to Hanley, Northwest Territories

Hardy
A.W.M. Kelly General Merchant Hardy, Sask.
(Good For $1.00 Trade)

Arthur Kelly came to Estevan, from Brandon, in 1892 and started a small hotel. Later adding a store at the side. In 1901 sold the hotel but kept the store. In 1908 both store and hotel burnt down so Kelly rented a small building close by to continue in groceries. In 1910 he went into partnership with G.Hobbs, building a large store in Estevan and a short time later starting a store in Goodwater, which at first operated from a tent. In 1912, Mr. Kelly started a store in Hardy for his son. In 1913 Archibald William Minton Kelly took over the Hardy store and continued in business until 1942 when he sold to his nephew. Tokens were issued in 1918 as a large amount of produce passed through the store. Archie Kelly advertised that he 'handled everything from needles to threshing machines as well as a full line of groceries'. Tokens were discontinued around 1937.
